What is it exactly?
Plantar Fasciitis is pain in the bottom of the foot. It is usually worse first thing in the morning, or after prolonged standing. The location of the pain can be from the ball of the foot to the heel, but it is most commonly found in the middle of the foot, or in the middle of the arch. Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of foot pain in outpatient medicine. It is caused by constant strain on the plantar fascia.
Common Causes of Plantar Fasciitis
The most common cause of plantar fasciitis is excessive standing or running in improper footwear. The foot should be maintained in a neutral position and the arch needs to be properly supported. There are many arch support systems sold, however, feet are like finger prints, in that, everyone’s are unique to them. Arch supports, also called foot orthotics should be custom made to fit your foot to correct your specific problem. Along with custom foot orthotics for arch support, there are other devices made to wear during the night to help keep the plantar fascia stretched.
Last but not least, the plantar fascia needs to be lengthened and worked over. Myofascial Release Technique or Graston Technique are great choices for helping to relieve the pain. Home stretches such as rolling your foot morning and evening on a tennis ball or frozen water bottle for 5 minutes to stretch out the fascia can help tremendously.
